Ben Strickland is licensed professional mariner and a retired U.S. Coast Guard Commander (CDR). He graduated from Maine Maritime Academy in 1995 and holds an active merchant marine license as a 200 ton Master and Unlimited tonnage Deck Officer. He attended the U.S. Naval War College in 2009 graduating with a Masters of Arts degree in National Security and Strategic Studies. He is a graduate of the Maritime Advanced Warfighting School (MAWS) and is a qualified Joint Operational Planner. CDR Strickland has a unique background that includes experience in surface warfare, strategic planning, defense policy, counter-drug operations, fisheries, immigration enforcement, search and rescue, operational readiness, training, maritime security and marine safety. During a naval career of over 20 years, he served aboard six Navy and coast Guard ships, including Command of his own cutter in one of the Coast Guard's most arduous areas of operation. He retired from active duty in 2015 and joined the federal government as a National Security Specialist as a strategic advisor for maritime sealift, strategic ports programs, and emergency operations plans. CDR Strickland later joined the private sector and now works in the defense industry where he specializes in naval combat systems and ballistic missile defense programs. CDR Strickland’s decorations include the Coast Guard Commendation Medal (3 awards), Navy Commendation Medal, Coast Guard Achievement Medal (3 awards), and Navy Achievement Medal as well as various unit, service, and campaign awards and commendations. Additionally he has earned permanent designators as a Coast Guard Cutterman, Surface Warfare Officer and Special Duty Officer (Merchant Marine, Deck). www.benstrickland.net
